How Do I Pick a Good Diet?
Today, the market is flooded with more types of diets than ever before. No matter where you turn, there seems to be a new plan, book, pill, or professional pushing their method, while promising great results with little effort on your part, in a short period of time. With all of the information being thrown at you, it can be extremely difficult to choose a diet that is both safe and effective. Here are a few diet selection principles to help you break through the confusion.
The key to choosing a successful diet plan is to pick one that will work for you. Many dieters choose a diet based solely upon things they have heard from other people, or knowing someone who has had great results on the plan. Just because your next-door neighbor went on the raw food diet for six months and dropped three sizes does not mean that you will have the same results. Choose a diet that will truly work for you, help you accomplish your goals, and one that you can add to your life with little disruption. If you choose a diet simply because other people are doing it, you will probably fail. Find a diet that will allow you to eat foods from many different food groups, and incorporates foods you enjoy. You greatly increase your chances of success when you can easily incorporate the diet into your daily schedule, we are all strapped for time, and if a diet forces you to spend hours preparing food every day, then you won’t be able to stick to it long-term.
A diet that allows you to have a break every couple of weeks is also a good option. This break will give you something to look forward to while you are on a more strict schedule, and it will give you the chance to treat yourself. This break does not give you permission to pig out and eat anything you want in huge quantities though. You need to have the willpower to eat a bit of the foods you crave, without ruining your diet by going on an all out binge on them.
It is always a good idea to contact your physician or a dietician before starting any new diet. Research diet choices thoroughly, and do not rush your decision, you want to make sure the diet you choose will promote a healthy lifestyle, incorporate a bit of exercise, and create changes that you can stick with for the long term.
